I'm Here!

The Exhibition Hall at Carlton Gardens and a pretty fountain
I have finally arrived! After a verrrrrry long flight, including several stops along the way, I am settled in Melbourne. As settled as I can be during orientation, that is.

A quick rundown of my first two days: I landed at around 11am and was through customs with my luggage by noon. A very chatty cab driver delivered me to my hotel, where I cleaned myself up and hit the streets of Melbourne. I explored around the area I'll be living, Carlton, which has some lovely gardens where I could enjoy the Australian sunshine. It's so lovely to have left winter and escaped to summer. I already got a sunburn on my nose, oops!

I made a bird friend apparently, because she got very close to me

Today I moved into my permanent lodgings, the RMIT Village. All the rooms have a bathroom and kitchen, which is a welcome change from Grinnell. I also have a balcony, though with a slightly disappointing street view. I do share all of this with a roommate, an Australian girl named Katie. I haven't actually met her yet, as she's currently in New Zealand before the start of term, but she left me a very nice note and has outfitted the room with some necessities like dish soap and towels. Her room is much more decorated than mine, something to work on for sure.

My beautifully empty room
Tomorrow we're off for a two day orientation trip down the Great Ocean Road. Apparently we're taking surf lessons, we'll see how that goes. But I can't wait to be by the ocean!
The view from my balcony. I have a balcony!

Augh, I'm so jealous of you in the sunshine and the warmth. Enjoy your trip oceanside! How's the jetlag so far?

  2. I want to know how the surfing goes as well. Although at this point in February, anything having to do with the beach and the sun would be a wonderful thing.
I love the photos of Melbourne, and I loved hearing about all the gelato, ymmm.
Will you get to see penguins on this trip?

  4. It sounds like you're having an amazing time! You are so lucky you got to see a Koala Bear. After you see Australian football played I'd like to hear what you thought about the game. Good luck with the start of your classes. Enjoy!

  5. It seems funny to see rainy day pictures. When I think of Australia I think of desert or the Great Barrier Reef or Sydney. BTW your dad and I started to look at places to go when we visit, and I am already stoked! Your dad, of course was looking at wine tours in the Barossa Valley. I looked up some lists of top 10 tings to see in Australia and the Great Ocean Road by Melbourne and Tasmania were listed in a couple. Can't wait!
    Love, Mom
